Dry Fire Hydrant Design #86 - Another Bridge Mount in Clarendon, Vermont

During the first week of December 2025, we completed another bridge mount dry fire hydrant installation for the Clarendon (Vermont) Volunteer Fire Department. Back in 2017, we installed one of our first systems in Vermont; that one was located on Walker Mountain Road in Clarendon. The 2025, installation involved a bridge privately owned by Casella Construction along Route 133. The unique challenge with the Casella bridge was the steel pipe rail. In 2018, we designed and installed one of our systems on a similar bridge in York County, Pennsylvania; so we simply replicated that design concept for the Casella bridge.
We started work on the Casella installation back in late October and finished the work in early December due to a parts delay. Given the 10-deg F temps on installation day, final painting and flow testing was left for the fire department to accomplish during warmer times.
The bridge spans the Clarendon River which has plenty of water and the location provides access to much needed fire protection water in the Clarendon/Ira/West Rutland area. The project was a good example of what a public/private endeavor can produce. The installation marks our 15th bridge-mount dry fire hydrant installation in the State of Vermont!
The welded steel pipe rail provided the challenge at this location,
Everything worked out just fine. Final painting and flow testing to occur when temps get warmer.
The new installation provides easy access to the Clarendon River along the Route 133 corridor. The installation is an example of excellent cooperative effort by the commercial property owner and the local fire department.
