Dry Fire Hydrant Design #78 - Bridge-Mount Installation - Maple Road, Sheffield, Massachusetts.

The first week of August had us working to install three bridge-mount dry fire hydrants in Sheffield, Massachusetts. It was a return trip for us because in 2022 we installed two, bridge-mount systems for the Town. This time around we installed three different versions of our system, a saddle-mount, an angle-mount, and an angle-mount using our Vermont High-Hat clamp. The installations were funded by the Town as part of their continuing project to upgrade and improve fire protection water supply resources in the non-hydranted area. The photos in this News Story are from the Maple Road installation at the bridge over Ironwork Brook. The concrete bridge rail caused us to use our Vermont High-Hat clamp angle-mount bracket to secure the system to the bridge. The clamp system is protected from snow plow damage and provides us another option when faced with these style bridges.
Because of the traffic on the road, our flow test was shortened; we just wanted to make sure everything worked. A flow of 1100 gpm was achieved at a lift of 14-feet and an elevation of 700 ft. The design used an ETT 6-inch NH male suction head and an ETT 6-inch stream strainer. Many thanks to Chief David Ullrich and the members of the Sheffield FD for supporting our installation operations during our work.
The dry fire hydrant installation is protected from snow plow damage; the clamping design allows even better protection.
