Apparatus Ingenuity - Stanley, Iowa Style

Chief Rodger Sill and the folks at the Stanley FD (Stanley, Iowa) have proven to be quite creative in building a response fleet of apparatus using a number of military and government surplus vehicles. During our 2012 rural water supply seminar in Stanley, we got to see the products of some good old "ingenuity." One of the rigs we saw was Stanley 513, a US Air Force surplus dump truck that was acquired through Iowa Forester FEPP. The rig is a 1988 IH1864 all-wheel drive with a DT366 diesel motor and Allison transmission.

The rig carries three personnel and is used for wild land fires, EMS runs, service calls, and whatever else comes along.

The unit is equiped with:

- An Army surplus CH47 internal ferry fuel pod (baffled) 600gal - plumbed so could dump or nurse thru 4" plumbing to 5"S
- An Army surplus 3kw diesel genset.
- A Navy surplus 40ft telescopic mast with radio antenna for mounted mobile and scenelight head.
- A CET pump
- 1" forestry lines precon at rear, left side, on right side of center walkway

The rear compartment (on shoreline) holds:
- Radio rack with 5x portables
- Streamlight rack with 1x anglehead lights
- Streamlight HL LED scenelight
- EMS Trauma bag w/O2
- Ped bag
- AED
- Glassmaster saw
- Sawzall

The left side compartment holds:
- 4 SCBA
- 1-1/2" nozzles
- Forestery wye
- Fittings/adapters per NFPA1901 for an engine co

The right side compartment holds:
- Large hand tool kit
- Tow chains
- Tub of blankets etc
- Shortboard
- Tarps and plastic sheeting
- Scotty portable eductors
