| Every pump operator course emphasizes the importance of back-flushing the fire pump after each drafting operation. There are a bunch of reasons why this is important - one of them is to prolong the life of valves. Sand, grit, and sediment need to flushed from the pump to ensure that valves seat correctly when closed. Otherwise, a ball valve can get scored and the seal end up leaking and dripping water. And....if it drips water it leaks air when drafting!
We had the chance to witness a ball valve rebuild so we took a few photos to share. While the damage does not appear severe, it was severe enough to cause a constant dripping leak.
So remember - when back-flushing, be sure to operate all of the valves - discharge and intake so that the seals get flushed out thoroughly. |
