Our most recent Rural Water Supply seminar was hosted last weekend (6/28&29) by the Gladys, VA Volunteer Fire Department and sponsored by the Central VA Firefighters Association. Around 25 folks from Campbell County, VA and from as far away as Chesapeake, VA attended to better their craft and learn about moving big water. Topics covered included nurse tanker operations, using the “rural hitch” to its best effect, and dump tank operations. Participants also got exposed to operating a turbo draft, drafting with multiple intakes, and what to do when a primer doesn’t work and you still have to get that prime. The seminar ended with the traditional 2 hour drill featuring 4 tankers (dumping), 1 grass rig, and 1 pumper (both pumping off), hauling water and achieving 650 gpm over about a 4 mile round trip. Everyone worked hard and learned a lot. Instructors for the seminar were Alan Butsch and Tim Legore.
